WE ASSEMBLE IN GOD'S NAME
Prelude Welcome and Announcements Personal Prayers of Preparation
WE ADORE AND CONFESS
Greeting: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you.
The Psalm Psalm 15 O Lord, who may abide in your tent? Who may dwell on your holy hill? [2] Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right, and speak the truth from their heart; [3] who do not slander with their tongue, and do no evil to their friends, nor take up a reproach against their neighbors; [4] in whose eyes the wicked are despised, but who honor those who fear the Lord; who stand by their oath even to their hurt; [5] who do not lend money at interest, and do not take a bribe against the innocent.
[Unison] Those who do these things shall never be moved. Prayer: God of love, you adopted us as your children. Grant that we may pass through this world with such integrity that no one will have just complaint against us. At the end, may we inherit what has been prepared for us in heaven; through our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
*Hymn #138 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty NICAEA
Call to Confession: The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. In faith and penitence, let us confess our sin before God and one another: (Romans 5:8; Hebrews 4:16)
Prayer of Confession: Dear God, we offer ourselves to you, aware that our sins are many. Sometimes we go too fast. Sometimes we sit too still. We wrorry about the wrong things and neglect what is important. We struggle to find the right balance.Forgive us. Restore us. Help us to find the right measures of worship and service, of self-care and self-giving, of faith and hope and love, as we seek to follow the example of Jesus. Amen. Moment for Silent Prayer Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Declaration of Pardon: (Ephesians 2:4, 5a, 6a, 8) God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which God loved us, even when we were dead through our sin, made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with him. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. Amen.

*Affirmation of Faith: from A Brief Statement of Faith In life and death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God's image male and female, of every race and people to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. We deserve God's condemnation, yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still.

Scriptures Used This Morning
Amos 8:1-12 This is what the Lord God showed me--a basket of summer fruit. [2] He said, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the Lord said to me, "The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never again pass them by. [3] The songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day," says the Lord God; "the dead bodies shall be many, cast out in every place. Be silent!" [4] Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, [5] saying, "When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, [6] buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat." [7] The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. [8] Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who lives in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt? [9] On that day, says the Lord God, I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight. [10] I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day. [11] The time is surely coming, says the Lord God, when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. [12] They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it.
Colossians 1:15-28 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; [16] for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers--all things have been created through him and for him. [17] He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. [18] He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. [19] For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, [20] and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. [21] And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, [22] he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him-- [23] provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel. [24] I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. [25] I became its servant according to God's commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, [26] the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. [27] To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. [28] It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
Luke 10:38-42 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. [39] She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. [40] But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." [41] But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; [42] there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

From Church History: Writer Strickland Gillilan was quoted in the April 28, 1940 bulletin: “Let the Sunday School cease long enough and it would take us a century to grow civilized enough to live together. Modern folks must not – cannot – go on living on the accumulated principle of our forebears. It is all right to use off the woodpile, but if we do not do our share of replenishing, our progeny will freeze.

The Psalm Psalm 77 I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, that he may hear me. [2] In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. [11] I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; I will remember your wonders of old. [12] I will meditate on all your work, and muse on your mighty deeds. [13] Your way, O God, is holy. What god is so great as our God? [14] You are the God who works wonders; you have displayed your might among the peoples. [15] With your strong arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. [16] When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; the very deep trembled. [17] The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered; your arrows flashed on every side. [18] The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. [19] Your way was through the sea, your path, through the mighty waters; yet your footprints were unseen. [Unison] [20] You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. Prayer: God of the ages, by signs and wonders you established your ancient covenant, and through the sacrifice of your Son you confirmed the new covenant yet more wondrously. Guide your church to the land of promise, that there we may celebrate your name with lasting praise through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
*Hymn #420 God of Grace and God of Glory CWM RHONDDA Call to Confession: This is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. I will forgive their evil deeds, and remember their sin no more. In penitence and faith, let us confess our sins to almighty God: (Jeremiah 31:33-34)
Prayer of Confession: Merciful God, we humble ourselves before you today to confess the ways in which we have failed. We have fallen short of your call to welcome all your children, to include enemies and even those different than we are. You have called us to give the cup of cold water to even the least, but we look the other way. You know our hesitations God. You know our fears and doubts and selfish ways. Forgive us and give us courage to serve you in all our actions. Amen.
A Moment of Silent Prayer Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Declaration of Pardon: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Amen!

“Sylvia and I thank all of you who have shown such special support in response to my mother’s recent death. Your loving kindness, the cards, and the many other acts of compassion made her funeral a real celebration of love. She would have been very grateful, and so are we. Thank you again for your love and affection……Bill Goodnight”
“Dear church, Thank you for all the kind deeds that you provided for our family during this time of my daddy’s illness and passing. My daddy loved this church because of the members past, present and future. I know he would be touched by the show of support you gave us during our time of grieving and celebrating. He would’ve certainly enjoyed the reception and meal after the service-- he loved people and for them to be happy and “meet and greet” one another. Betty, Lacey, Norman, Chally, C.J. and Maleigh thank all of you for your caring words, notes, food, flowers, and donations in Daddy’s name….Frankie Lewis.”

Greeting: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you.
Responsive Reading from Galatians 3:23-29 Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus (we) are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of (us) are one in Christ Jesus. [Unison] And if (we) belong to Christ, then we are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise. Prayer: Father God, we rejoice today to be your children, as believers in Christ Jesus. Help us to share the reconciliation of the gospel with those around us, and keep us mindful of our inheritance in you with all the saints. Amen.

Call to Confession: Hebrews 4:15-16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need: Prayer of Confession: Creator God, you breathed the breath of life into every one of your children. You know our every need and care for us faithfully. Yet, we fail to follow your call and your guidance. We lack courage to care for all people, those who differ from us, those who demand too much, those who take up our time with petty concerns. We are impatient with one another and carelessly harm each other with quick and hurtful words. Have mercy upon us for resisting new insights you offer and new challenges you give to us. Enlarge our world to include all your children. In the name of Christ who lived and loved fully. Amen.
A Moment of Silent Prayer Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Psalm 42:1-11 As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. [2] My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God? [3] My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me continually, "Where is your God?" [4] These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I went with the throng, and led them in procession to the house of God, with glad shouts and songs of thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival. [5] Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help [6] and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar. [7] Deep calls to deep at the thunder of your cataracts; all your waves and your billows have gone over me. [8] By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life. [9] I say to God, my rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I walk about mournfully because the enemy oppresses me?" [10] As with a deadly wound in my body, my adversaries taunt me, while they say to me continually, "Where is your God?" [11] Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God. Luke 8:26-39 Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. [27] As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. [28] When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me"-- [29] for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) [30] Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. [31] They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. [32] Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. [33] Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. [34] When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. [35] Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. [36] Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. [37] Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. [38] The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, [39] "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

WE ADORE AND CONFESS
The Psalm Psalm 146
1 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! 2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 3 Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any person,, for there is no help in them. 4 When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish. 5 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! whose hope is in the Lord their God; 6 who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; 7 who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger. The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous 9 and cares for the stranger; the Lord sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. [Unison] 10 The Lord shall reign forever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! Prayer: Blessed are those who put their trust in you, O God, our sure rock and refuge. Guard us from giving to any other the allegiance which belongs only to you. Shine upon us with the brightness of your light, that we may love you with a pure heart and praise you forever; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymn #339 Be Thou My Vision SLANE
Call to Confession: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God. (1 John 1:8, 9)
Prayer of Confession Compassionate God, your touch heals and your word saves, yet we look for salvation in other places. We long to know the fullness of your love, but our sin gets in the way. What we say seldom matches how we live. Help us make our confession. Hear us as we pray. Hold us in your mercy. Touch us again, so that we may live this day in joy and praise, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Moment of Silent Prayer Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Declaration of Pardon: Hear the good news! The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (1Timothy 1:15) In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Amen!

Scriptures Used Today
Romans 5:1-5 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, [2] through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. [3] And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, [4] and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, [5] and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
Luke 7:11-17 11Soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. 12As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. 13When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, rise!” 15The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us!” and “God has looked favorably on his people!” 17This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country. The Psalm Psalm 8
Refrain [1] O Lord our Lord, how exalted is your name in all the world! [2] Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above the heavens. You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, to quell the enemy and the avenger. Refrain [3] When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, [4] what are human beings that you should be mindful of them? mortals that you should seek them out? Refrain [5] You have made them but little lower than the angels; you adorn them with glory and honor; [6] you give them mastery over the works of your hands; you put all things under their feet: Refrain [7] All sheep and oxen, even the wild beasts of the field, [8] the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea. [9] O Lord our Lord, how exalted is your name in all the world! Refrain
Prayer: God Most High, in Jesus Christ you rule the world with righteousness and judge the nations with equity. Cast down the haughty and lift up the lowly. Make us compassionate to the needy that we may be close to Jesus Christ, our servant Lord. Amen.
*Hymn #138 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! NICAEA \ The Call to Confession: 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let you pray together a prayer of confession: Unison Prayer of Confession: God the Father, Son and Spirit, God of grace, love, and communion, we confess that we have failed to love you with all our heart, soul, and mind; and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We ignore your commandments, stray from your way, and follow other gods. Have mercy on us. Forgive our sin and raise us to new life that we may serve you faithfully and give honor to your holy name, even Jesus Christ. Amen.
A Moment of Silent Prayer Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
The Declaration of Pardon: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
